LGBT ACTIVISM IN CONTEMPORARY SERBIA: POLITIZATION OF IDENTITY AND STRATEGIES OF LGBT ACTIVISTS
Keywords:
identity politics, strategic essentialism, queer politics, LGBT activism in SerbiaAbstract
In this paper I deal with certain aspects of LGBT activism in contemporary Serbia. I analyze the ways in which, after the political changes in 2000, LGBT activists politicize LGBT identities and the strategies which they employ in order to make the legal and social status of LGBT persons better. I will examine to which extent the application of identity politics and the concept of strategic essentialism on the one hand, and queer politics which arose as a critique of the aforementioned ideas on the other, offer an optimal framework for LGBT activism in contemporary Serbia, and whether they provide the desired results. I will consider whether disagreements between LGBT organizations occur and what is considered as cause for the formation of fractions and conflict: a different view of priorities in solving certain legal and political issues, what strategies are best employed to achieve these goals, the extent of cooperation to be realized with representatives of the government and the civil sector etc.
