Collective Fears in the Context of Social Sciences and European and Serbian Late Medieval History: Basic Interpretations and Facts

In this paper, the author seeks to provide an overview by first explaining the concepts of fear and collective fears, that is, how they are interpreted within the social sciences and from a historical perspective, and then by illustrating, through European and Serbian examples from the late medieval period, the ways in which collective fears were manifested. The examples and interpretations presented in this article represent only one of several possible selections, intended to establish a foundation for the study of fear in late medieval European history. Particular attention is devoted to the fear of the Other, whether as an external or internal enemy, as well as to the fear of sudden extraordinary circumstances that brought death and material destruction, caused by disease and natural disasters.
